Activity Report 2009 - 2010
Last year was a happening year for Tehzeeb Foundation. We held a variety of music events in the cosmopolitan city and continued with our on-going projects of
recording and producing musical talent of leading artistes from India and Pakistan.
We also concentrated on producing written material on cultural and literary subjects.
Tehzeeb Recital - Solo Tabla By Ustad Tafu Khan
Tehzeeb Foundation arranged an evening of solo tabla recital
by Ustad Altaf Hussain (Tafoo) on April 27, 2010. Ustad Tafu
Khan is a man of many talents. As a music director of a number
of Punjabi films, his career spreads over 40 yearsUstad Tafu Khan prides himself to be a tabla player in which he is known for being
highly creative and innovative. He gave a breathtaking performance (teen-taal 16 beats)
in the presence of a spellbound crowd at NAPA, which included music connoisseurs,
practitioners, NAPA faculty members and students.
Tehzeeb Recital - Sarangi Solo By Kamal Sabri
Tehzeeb Foundation arranged a Sarangi Solo Recital by Kamal
Sabri - a sarangi maestro from Delhi on Saturday, May 1, 2010
at National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA). Sabri who
represents the seventh generation of a distinguished family of
traditional musicians, demonstrated profound versatility in
playing the fast vanishing instrument. To accompany him on
tabla, we had Ustad Bashir Khan - one of the leading
percussionists of the subcontinent.
In India, Kamal Sabri has participated in several prestigious festivals over the years
which include Harballabh Music Festival in Jallandhar, Tansen Samaroh in Gawalior,
Swami Haridas Music Festival Mumbai, Sangeet Natak Academy Golden Jubilee Festival
Hyderabad, to name a few. In Pakistan, he has been participating in events and
workshops held by Tehzeeb Foundation at different locations including NAPA.
Vocal Classical by Ustad Fateh Ali Khan
It was an informal yet highly memorable evening held on
October 15, 2010, attended by a select gathering of music
connoisseurs including Pir Aftab Hussain Shah Jilani, Federal
Minister for Culture. Amongst the guests, there were a number
of foreign students from diverse backgrounds who were visiting
Pakistan for the first time.
Tehzeeb’s Social Responsibility
Being a responsive organization, Tehzeeb
Foundation set up its Flood Relief Activities 2010.
We acted as an interface with reputable
organizations in Sindh and Punjab provinces
working for the same cause. Our recipients
included Medical Aid Foundation, HUM TV
Relief Services, Zohra Memorial Hospital, Sheikh
Association Sindh, and other individual set-ups in
the interiors of Sindh and Punjab. Our
contributions included donation of ambulance,
medicines, and other articles of immediate need
including food items to the flood victims. We wish
to acknowledge M/s. Zafa Pharmaceuticals, who
provided medicines on discounted rate.
Sale proceeds from our music productions received during the Tehzeeb Festival
2010 will be directed towards the flood relief fund. Donations from general public
are also welcome.
Tehzeeb Foundation also participated in Flood
Relief Mela organized by the British Deputy
High Commission-Karachi on October 2,
2010. Apart from making a cash donation to
the BDHC’s endeavours, we also put up a
music stall featuring Abdullah Khan
(shehnainawaz) and other musicians from the
flood-stricken areas of Sindh. Sale proceeds
from our publications / productions were
donated to the Flood Relief Mela.
Sponsorships & Collaborations
Tehzeeb Foundation continued sponsoring major events and endeavors towards
promotion of classical arts. We supported the All Pakistan Music Conference - Lahore in
their Annual Conference held on October 29-30, 2009.
We sponsored a music recital in memoriam of late Ustad Ahmad Ali Khan held in
Alliance Francaise on April 10, 2010.
We also collaborated with the British Council-Karachi in
organizing their National Customer Care Week held on October
4-8, 2010. We arranged a vocal recital of Karam Abbas Khan - a
young promising vocalist of Pakistan - for the British Council staff
and their guests.
Sharif Awan, General Secretary-Tehzeeb Foundation, was nominated by the Federal
Ministry of Culture as a member of the Board of Governors of the Pakistan National
Council of the Arts (PNCA), an official body working for the cause of music, arts and
culture in Pakistan.
